Divide your practicing time.
by: David from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi, don't be frustrated please :)

Start with working on your mentality I'd say. Remember that you play for your soul and pleasure and leave your ego on the side.
It takes time to become good at something you do.
Not only in piano but in every aspect in life.

As for finding the time to practice I'd really write 20 minutes at least in my agenda dedicated to practicing the piano.

Then I'd learn some chords (not a lot of chords but just a few - There's a limit of how much new information you can process in one time and then I'd go try them by following one of our piano tutorials.

Want a tip from me? Always work in three levels...
Awarness, understanding and practice.
First be aware of what you do and what you have to learn, then understand why it has to be done in a certain way and finally learn how to do it.

This proccess will enrich your practice and guarantee that you won't be stucked on one of those elements for too long.

I hope this helps. Did I answer your question?
Please let me know

Best regards

Dave

PRACTICE TIME?
by: Anonymous

I too am frustrated by my lack of focus on piano practicing. After nearly 40 years of playing by ear while steadily diminishing my sight reading ability I have begun lessons for the first time since age 16. Findning time to practice chord structures and just play is very difficult. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!

Thanks so much David!

I can really use this information to improve my piano playing!

Combining all the important aspects of piano playing in your practicing time
by: David from www.piano-play-it.com

I suggest you combine piano technique, playing piano by ear, reading piano sheet music, and having fun in your practice. I'll give you an idea of how you can do that.

1. Piano Technique - It's maybe nice to start your practice with a simple E.D Excercize (Every Day) exercise for 5 minutes. You can use your concentration to improve the awarness of your body, and to learn to perform new movements with your hand which will increase your flexibility through the rest of your practice.

2. What you can do next is play a song by ear in all scales on the piano for 7 minutes or so.
Check our Play piano by ear to see how to work it out. It's fun to do.
You don't have to play a song in all keys in one day of course. Play it in 4 scales and repeat those scales through the next day. Then add 4 new ones during the next day.

3. Reading piano sheet music - This part of the practice takes often, more time if you take it seriously since you have to pay attention to the small details. Give it 10 minutes at least and choose pieces you like. Then read carefully, first the right hand, then the left hand and then combine them together. Try to pay attention to fingering and to dynamics.

4. Use your spare time to work on something you really like. You can simply doodle on the piano if you feel like it. Seek for a piano tutorial of a song you fancy in our piano tutorial section or improvise a bit.

Make sure your enjoying each and every practice even when things get a bit harder.
Patience and enthusiasm is the key to success!

I hope I gave you an idea on how you can organize your time. Another important point is that you should remember that life is flexible. Every day is different.
If you feel you want to spend your whole practice to a piano tutorial that's great of course.

But on the long run practicing on a variety of tasks will help you to improve your piano playing in the most efficiant way.
